Description
When Saint Thomas reached Chennai in 70 AD, he stayed at this particular area and after his death, a group of Portuguese built a church at this spot. This was by the name of the Church of Our Lady of Expectations. Situated in the St. Thomas Mount, the Church of Our Lady of Expectations houses a stone cross embedded on the wall. It is believed that Saint Thomas carved this cross using his nails. Also known as bleeding cross, it reportedly bled between 1558 and 1704. Owing to a strong legend, many locals as well as visitors come here to seek blessings as it is believed that the church has miraculous powers.
