Description

Mahalaxmi Temple is one of the most famous temples of Mumbai situated on Bhulabhai Desai Road in Mahalaxmi area. It is dedicated to Mahalakshmi the central deity of Devi Mahatmyam. The temple was built in 1831 by Dhakji Dadaji (1760 1846), a Hindu merchant. As per one of the legends associated with the origin of this temple, this shrine was built during project Hornby Vellard. Despite determined efforts of constructing Vellard's seaside wall, its parts collapsed twice. After the second collapse, the chief engineer (who belonged to Pathare Prabhu community) saw in his dreams an idol of Devi immersed in the sea. A search was conducted and an idol was found, and the Mahalakshmi Temple was hence built. It is believed that there were no collapses after that, and the project was completed without any obstacles.
